Kavya Kutiram: A Slice of Kerala in the Heart of Pune

Project Name: Kavya Kutiram

Design Firm: One Habitat Studio

Office Website: www.onehabitatstudio.com

Stepping into Kavya Kutiram feels like entering a serene Kerala home, where tradition meets modern comfort. Designed for a family of three—a working couple and their child—this Pune apartment draws inspiration from Kerala’s timeless beauty. Earthy browns and greens form the foundation of the home’s color palette, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

A Grand Welcome

From the entrance itself, Kerala’s architectural charm comes alive. Square wooden rafters on the ceiling add depth and character, while a two-tone stucco wall in earthy green and beige sets the tone for the entire home. A polished wooden border subtly merges the colors and textures, enhancing visual interest. Polished Kota stone flooring, a veneered wooden console, and carved wooden mirrors paired with brass artifacts reflect the home’s deep-rooted traditional essence.

Living & Dining: Earthy Elegance

The living and dining areas are thoughtfully designed to balance functionality with South Indian aesthetics. Custom-made wooden furniture with cane details brings warmth, while handcrafted pieces add a touch of nostalgia. The sofa, with its cane-paneled sides and wooden spherical legs, pairs beautifully with a handcrafted wooden center table. Glass-front cane shutters offer a smart, easy-to-maintain solution.

A bespoke artwork depicting Kerala’s rich culture adds vibrancy to the space, breaking the otherwise muted tones. The terracotta-clad feature wall further enhances the warmth, seamlessly tying the living and dining spaces together.

The compact Puja unit is thoughtfully designed to blend in while making a statement. Curved edges soften its form, and fluted drawer shutters with spherical legs give it an elegant touch. Brass artifacts complete the spiritual aesthetic.

The dining area continues the theme with a wooden dining table and cane-backed chairs, fostering a cozy, intimate setting. Strategically placed indoor plants add a breath of freshness, bringing in Kerala’s deep connection to nature.

A Kitchen with Simplicity & Functionality

The kitchen follows a minimalistic approach while maintaining harmony with the rest of the home. Polished Kota flooring extends into the kitchen, visually tying it to the living spaces. The white quartz countertop makes the space feel more expansive, while green dado tiles above the platform integrate seamlessly with the home’s earthy palette.

Master Bedroom: Kerala’s Vernacular Charm

The master bedroom continues to embrace Kerala’s essence with its stucco-textured walls, wooden furniture, and cane details. The standout feature is the customized four-poster bed, reimagined for a contemporary setting. Above the bedside, a beautifully crafted artwork reflects Kerala’s cultural heritage.

The full-height wardrobe features cane shutters with a glass overlay, ensuring both aesthetics and practicality. The wooden console table, designed with unique legs and built on-site, adds a touch of craftsmanship.

Guest Room: Compact & Functional

Designed as a multifunctional space, the guest room doubles as a study. Since the homeowner often works from home, a study table takes center stage, while a sofa-cum-bed ensures flexibility for guests. Every detail, including the cushion covers, has been carefully chosen to align with the home’s overall theme.

A Home That Blends Tradition with Modern Comfort

Kavya Kutiram is a seamless blend of Kerala’s rich architectural heritage and contemporary functionality. By incorporating traditional elements in a thoughtful, modern way, this home is a perfect example of how culture and comfort can coexist beautifully.
