Vermeir House by AB Design: A Layered, Tactile Retreat in Kolkata

Nestled in the heart of Kolkata, Vermeir House is a masterclass in low-maintenance luxury. Designed by Aanchhal Bhuwalka of AB Design and completed in October 2024, this 1,800-sqft residence caters to a mature couple who love to entertain their two sons and four grandchildren—without ever compromising on everyday ease.

Highlights

  • Material Mélange: Polished marble, burnished metal and sumptuous fabrics play off one another to create a rich, multi-sensory experience.

  • Family-First Planning: Zones flow intuitively, accommodating quiet daily life while easily expanding to welcome visiting family.

  • Sculptural Details: From the abstract threadwork on the Leatherite panel in the living room to the arc-shaped metal structure wrapping the dining area’s curated wallpaper, every gesture feels both intentional and playful.

A Calm, Collected Concept
At its core, Vermeir House champions simplicity with soul. Clean lines and a muted palette set the stage for tactile materials to shine. A welcoming foyer, defined by a glass partition and towering storage units, offers a moment of pause before you step into the heart of the home.

The real jewel, however, is the centrally anchored mandir. Bathed in natural light from an adjacent balcony, this spiritual nook offers a serene sanctuary—proof that functional design need not skimp on soul.

Why We Love It
Vermeir House proves that “timeless” and “serene” aren’t synonyms for “sterile.” Instead, A B Design shows us how to craft a home that’s both effortlessly elegant and wholeheartedly livable.
