In conversation with Marie Lundström, Creative Director, Home Furnishings, IKEA India who talks about the trends that will make 2017 a design-savvy
What trends do you foresee for 2017, when it comes to furniture design?
We at IKEA are a little sensitive to trends being the ultimate fashion. But, if I still have to talk about trends, I believe multi-functional furniture will play a significant role in the near future. Home furnishing will now deal with health and well-being. Plus, bathrooms will get bigger and trendier. Furthermore, reusing and recycling are methods that will catch up.
Colour trends you think will be in vogue?
Darker colours and white will take charge. Dark grey and green are also taking precedence.
Where do you see furniture design heading in the near future?
Furniture design in the near future will have to be smart and inventive. It will have to be more resourceful. Design, I think, should move towards using healthier materials.
Do you think people have shifted to hand-made designs?
We are running a lot of different social projects and plan to involve women in the process of design. We will handpick some countries and stores, and help different communities to upgrade production without compromising on traditions. Indian handicraft industry is the biggest and so far the best.
