“I wanted my home to be an amalgamation of different eras,” explains Geetanjali, looking around her new masterpiece — The Verandas, at Gurgaon’s Golf Course Road. Designed and decorated by her, the house is spread across 4,500 sq ft, and befits Geetanjali’s clear vision of how she wanted her home to be. “I wanted the apartment to look spacious, with the right colours. I was sure about what I wanted to use, right from the design of the furniture to its polishes,” she explains.
All she wanted was a plush look, without being over the top. So as you enter, you see one wall with a black mirror and wooden panelling and cabinetry that complements the look. While the lack of natural light did make the area initially oppressive and dark, Geetanjali decided to panel it with beige suede to lend it lightness and opulence, that too without stripping it down! Offsetting the beige is the furniture in deep bordeaux with hints of brown. “I have used an oil on canvas painting of Buddhist monks in hues of green which adds to the existing colour palate. And the light coloured marble flooring is the icing on the cake,” smiles Geetanjali.
The rich tones of cream, black, mustard and natural textures lend a calming simplicity to the living room, which making it a large space. With two seating arrangements in the living room, Geetanjali chose beautiful Persian carpets for both areas to establish a harmonious flow. Velvet upholstered sofas in cream and chairs in Etro fabric, wood and a marble mantel piece and fire place add character to the space. The wood and metal coffee table designed by her lends elegance and airiness to the room.
An avid art collector, many walls of the house feature oil on canvas commissioned by Sanjib Gogoi, charcoals by Naradri Paul, originals from the Mughal and Kangra period, Namrita Bachchan, among others. A long dining table with fresh flowers bring in a sense of warmth to the dining area. The left wall features dull gold and cream striped French wall fabric and original Mughal paintings dating back 300 years, making the room chic, elegant and classy. “All the accessories are from my old house and the classic Italian red crystal chandeliers are from my store, Andy Home. You will find sterling silver artefacts, silver frames, Venetian glass decorative vases and bowls, silver candelabras, ashtrays from Villaroy & Boch, Rosenthal, Waterford crystal & led crystal decanters, Murano glass and others. Predominantly light colours off set with dark accents give the room a sharp yet warm feel,” adds Geetanjali.
The family lounge runs off the formal drawing room, so Geetanjali wanted to have a similar feel and look yet in a more toned down manner. This room has an Italian leather sofa in shades of dark olive, Belgian tapestry horse head cushions, rich silk curtains with velvet appliqué floral patterns especially treated to give a vintage look and a Kashmiri woollen rug. “The wall to wall book case, framed family portraits and one complete wall in antique mirror makes this room my favourite space!” smiles Geetanjali.
Strongly masculine, Geetanjali’s father’s room features a chocolate brown leather bed. A trunk style side table with a brass trim and detailing matches the furniture perfectly. To complete the room, she has added a top opening ottoman upholstered in Etro fabric, off white raw silk Roman blinds, a woollen Kashmiri rug and Thierry Poncelet cushions. We also loved the room for the huge windows that allow excellent natural lighting.
“The first thing I bought for my room was a Kashmiri 10×10 silk on silk rug. Undoubtedly, the most stunning carpet I ever laid my eyes on, it was love at first sight! Not just for its design but because it it my mother’s favourite colour — powder turquoise with black and tan,” shares Geetanjali. Her room features a king sized four poster bed in walnut brown with delicate bedside tables to match. A two-seater velvet sofa at the foot of the bed in rich turquoise goes well with the ottoman in burgundy velvet. A writing desk and chair, sideboard and a media unit complete the décor. She has used white Carrera marble flooring for a clean look.
The USP of Geetanjali’s home is the the deck. “I had the deck sealed off with glass windows and a door. This was done so that the space could be used throughout the year,” she explains. This room serves as her father’s suite with his music system and television. The choice of materials is more rustic, with log wood counter tops, tables and leather upholstery with white muslin curtains. As this area is largely used by her father, it bears a masculine feel with prints of horses adorning the walls. Of course we also admired the Ralph Lauren horse-shoe brass and leather chandelier! The wooden flooring and ceiling add to the warmth.
Geetanjali’s new space reflects her life as well as choices. But, was it difficult to design and decorate the entire space alone? “Not really! The space was easy to work with and because there were no restrictions, it was a blank canvas for me to transform my imagination into reality,” states Geetanjali.
We agree and love the result!
