How did you find your way into architecture?
Being born into a family of civil engineers and discussing bridges and dams for breakfast, I was introduced to the world of architecture at an early stage. I drew my very fi rst 3D draft in the 9th grade and with my father’s guidance, I found my way into architecture. I have been fortunate that right after my graduation, I got a chance to work with Stein, Doshi & Bhalla, New Delhi. Subsequently, after my Master’s in
Architecture from the University of Minnesota, I joined Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Chicago, USA. And aft er three years I returned to Bangalore in 1989 to start IDEA Centre Architects.
What is the role of an architect in urban planning?
I recently started an organization called India Urban Care Forum that aims to provide solutions to multiple urban issues. Right from garbage segregation in our houses to sewage treatment plans in our cities, there has been no serious study done till date. The role of an urban architect is developing, determining and implementing a city plan that leaves no issue untouched.
What are the changes in design, material and concepts that you support or don’t support?
The initiation of glazed architecture is something that I would never support as buildings sealed with glass consume a lot of energy. Wi-Fi connected cities are considered as smart cities, whereas I believe they become towers of isolation.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Primarily from nature, the IT park Infosys, Mangalore inspired by terrace farming is one of the many vivid expressions of my inspiration. Nature is brimming with ultimate creations which make you question its multi-fold beauty and concepts. When you analyze it, you find the rules of nature and create something special.
What is your take on green designs?
India has always been green, we do not need certificates to be eco-friendly. The confute is that we use synthetic materials to be considered green. The extensive use of glass in our buildings only generates the green house effect, which is further artificially cooled down to make the space habitable.
