Impressions: Delilah Rodrigues
Designer Lipika Sud uses the rich cultural heritage of traditional Indian art and craft to create designs that are truly mesmerising
Q How did design happen to you…
Design and creativity are inborn. I have always been creatively inclined since school and won several prizes for paintings. This led me to quit my job at The Taj Group of hotels after my graduation from Sri Ram College of Commerce and pursue my passion. I have been practising as an interior designer for more than 25 years. As the Founder Director of Lipika Sud Interiors Pvt. Ltd., I have designed several prestigious
projects in India and abroad.
Q Sharing your experience…
It’s been a great journey. From changing mindsets of people that interior design is only for bored housewives, to the fact that it is a very serious profession has been quite a challenge. Being the President of The Guild of Designers & Artists and the Chairperson of Institute of Indian Interior Designers, Designer Lipika Sud uses the rich cultural heritage of traditional Indian art and craft to create designs that are truly mesmerising Impressions: Delilah Rodrigues Ethnic Influences Delhi for four consecutive years, has helped me bring a lot of seriousness to this profession.
Q Your definition of design…
Design to me is creativity put in perspective, which touches the inner core of a human being and translates into a visual delight for others to enjoy. Creativity creates business, but business affords creativity. That’s my simple philosophy, you have to have both.
Q Essentials of a good design….
Functionality and durability play a very important role in design. Design should meet new requirements, inarticulated needs, or existing market needs. It should be outof- the-box and futuristic.
Q Design is much more than we think…
Design is a reflection of a person‘s personality. It has no boundaries. It is all around us, whether man-made or created by nature.
Q My Medium…
My medium is to create design, which touches the soul of a person viewing it. For me this can be achieved by using our rich cultural heritage of art and craft. Traditional Indian art falls in a different league altogether. Indian arts like Sanjhi, Madhubani, Bastar, etc. need to be revived. These aren’t just pieces of art, they are a living reflection of the culture, customs and traditions of a community. Only by creating
market linkages and awareness, we can create job opportunities for such craftsmen.
Q The road ahead…
I want to continue to work extensively with craftsmen at the grass-root level in villages. I believe that in order to keep the dying crafts alive, we need to create work opportunities for these artisans, financially empowering them and giving them a life of dignity. My Campaign ‘Proud to be Indian’ is a step towards bringing the community together and create such opportunities.
Q Handy tips for upcoming designers…
Think from your heart. As long as you achieve what your heart desires, it is okay to break the rules sometimes. There are no hard and fast rules for creativity. So, go ahead and bring your passion forward and showcase it to the world.
